Douglas S. Gilliland, Esq.
Mr. Gilliland’s legal career in civil rights began over 25 years ago when he represented a black San Diego State University student that was shot by a Borg-Warner security guard in Belmont Park after shopkeepers complained that the “blacks” were scaring away tourists. Borg-Warner wound up paying over 2.2 million dollars after the jury verdict and subsequent appeal and petition to the California Supreme Court. Since that time, Mr. Gilliland has successfully represented individuals in civil rights cases against the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection, California Highway Patrol, and many local police departments, county sheriff’s offices, and security guard companies. He has appeared on Good Morning America and his cases have been covered internationally by the BBC, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Telemundo and nationally by CNN, Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and by numerous local print and television news agencies. He is a regular panelist on the private practice of law at California Western School of Law, and most recently a guest speaker on civil rights litigation at the University of Southern California School of Law.
